Where does art inspiration come from?

Your creative energy is abundant. The artist child within you wants to play. It’s time to get started on your next masterpiece, but what will it be?

Art inspiration is incredibly unique to everyone therefore, I can only speak from my experiences as an oil and watercolor painting artist.

Initially, I was taught to use photographs as a reference for painting landscapes and animals. I took my own photos and also used photos from books, magazines, and calendars.

My one big rule has always been never paint exactly what is in the photo. A photo can be deceiving. The colors and light are misleading. For me, a photo is only a beginning reference usually more for composition layout than anything else.

Traveling has also been a good source of art inspiration for me. Many times, I just remember what I saw and paint without a reference. Dreams are a great source of inspiration for my paintings as well.

Wherever your art inspiration comes from– see it, keep it simple, and put it on your canvas. What will your next masterpiece be?
