Mirrored puffins: family by the sea

Nature speaks in mirrors. The quiet serenity of mountain peaks finding their match in the endless depths of the sea brings a profound sense of peace—one that deeply inspires my work. Watercolor was the natural choice for Mirrored Puffins: Family by the Sea, allowing soft washes to layer seamlessly and capture the fluid relationship between land, water, and life.

I chose the puffin family because their way of life mirrors this very rhythm. Spending most of their lives riding the open ocean waves, these birds make their journey back to rugged coastal cliffs specifically to nest and raise their young.

In this piece, the vibrant, warm hues of the puffins’ beaks contrast beautifully with the cool coastal blues and earthy mountain tones. While the central puffin family serves as the clear focal point, the double-exposure style creates a soft mirror image of the surrounding landscape. These reflective coastal layers wrap around the peripheral view, bringing rhythm, gentle movement, and a quiet sense of home to the entire composition.
